Being faithful to someone is good: blindly supporting them even when they are wrong is bad. You have to step back if someone you love is getting themselves involved in things that are unwise or illegal, or if they are saying things that you know are not true. You won't be abandoning them if you distance yourself from their antics; you'll be protecting yourself. And when push comes to shove, you have to put yourself first. If you endorse their behavior, you'll encourage them to do worse.
